When firing a long barrel rifle most of the powder is burned before the bullet leaves the tip of the barrel, which means very little pyrotechnic flash on each shot. However, with the advent of carbines with much shorter barrels, the powder doesn’t have the chance to be depleted resulting in a powerful explosion of burning powder on each shot which not only betrays the position, but effectively blinds the shooter preventing proper target acquisition.

Interestingly enough, there is a common misconception between muzzle breaks and flash hiders. Although a muzzle break can to some degree disperse the explosion of powder at the end of the barrel of a rifle, its primary goal is to reduce the massive recoil when firing large caliber ammunition.
